If all variables were neutralized and each minute felt exactly the same, then all the stages would yield identical productivity from their participant.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many variables do exist.  These variables make the particular waking period seem to pass either more quickly or more slowly.  I will discuss two of the most important variables that influence relative sensations of time in polyphasic sleeping: variant amounts of sunlight, standard mealtimes and energy from food.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Sunlight comes and goes&lt;br /&gt;Sunlight triggers the circadian clock, and then the circadian clock influences feelings of exhaustion, energy, personal drive, and apathy.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Meals&lt;br /&gt;Meals not only take up a substantial amount of time, but also the food that is eaten gives the patient long-lasting, sustained energy.  I usually eat lunch and dinner during my 1pm-6:30pm waking period.
